Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a diagnostic tool that can detect abnormalities from ASCUS to cervical cancer; cryotherapy can be applied during the same visit to the doctor. This exam allows doctors to get an actual view of the abnormal areas on the cervix, so tissue sample, called biopsies, can be taken right from those areas. A cervical exam that is used as a diagnostic tool after an abnormal Pap smear has been found. This exam is frequently scheduled and has few risks associated with it. From these results and the results from the Pap smear, the doctor can recommend an appropriate treatment.
