Unknown sexual partners, tobacco use, hormonal changes, age, stress factor, as well as some of the concurrent viral diseases can be the cause of the infection. In toddlers who are still in diapers, non-sexual transmission is a possibility.

A wart-like growth on the genitals characterizes Human papilloma virus, a sexually-transmitted disease. Papilloma viruses are responsible for causing warts on the skin. Infections of the genital and anal regions with HPV cause growths on the penis, urethra, vulva, cervix, vagina, and around the anus.
