Genital Herpes Sign Symptom
There are various ways of diagnosing genital herpes; sign, symptom, and occurence are all considered for HSV, but HPV can be diagnosed with a cone biopsy for genital wart strains.
A viral culture on scrapped/aspirated lesion sample is poor (frequent false negatives); a negative cannot confirm no viral presence. HSV diagnostics include: HIV antibody serology, HSV Western blot analyses, HSV isolation in cell culture, HSV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzyme analyses, cellular immunology studies and mucosal immunity studies.

HSV can be transmitted even when there are no visible symptoms or lesions. A type specific test, glycoprotein G, is a relatively new FDA approved technology with accuracy comparable to the POCkit, HerpesSelect, and Western Blot technologies. Although highly sensitive, it only measures exposure to HSV and not the active presence of the virus. A serology measures immune response antibodies against the virus.
